Brief Overview

Zinc sulphate monohydrate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula ZnSOH2O. Zinc sulphate occurs in three types of hydrate. Zinc sulphate is listed on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines. The monohydrate exists as the gunningite mineral in nature.

Manufacturing Process

The main raw material of Zinc Sulphate monohydrate production is Sulphuric Acid. Sulphuric Acid is manufactured by oxidising Sulphur Dioxide gas to Sulphur Trioxide. Sulphur Trioxide is then hydrated to get Sulphuric Acid. Zinc Sulphate is prepared from reaction of Sulphuric acid & Zinc Oxide.

Agriculture Industry: Zinc sulphate is used to supply the zinc in animal feeds, fertilizers and agricultural sprays. The monohydrate form is considered a safe source of zinc for all animal species. It provides a long-term supply of zinc to crops as it does not dissolve as readily as zinc heptahydrate. It is provided as a zinc supplement as zinc is important for enzyme activity associated with carbohydrate metabolism in plants and animals. It is also important for protein synthesis in animals.

Chemical Industry: Zinc sulphate is used as a precursor to the pigment lithopone and used as an electrolyte for zinc plating.

Other Applications:  Zinc sulphate is used as a mordant in dyeing, as a preservative for animal skin and leather, and as an astringent and emetic in medicines. It is also used as an activator in latex paper and used for water purification.
