Brief Overview
Tert-Butyl peroxybenzoate (TBPB) a chemical compound from the group of peresters which contains both a phenyl group and a tert-butyl group. TBPB is a clear, light yellow liquid with mild, aromatic odor. TBPB is little soluble in water but highly soluble in many organic solvents such as ethanol or phthalate.Because it is explosive, it is usually transported with solid or as a solvent slurry.
Manufacturing Process
A standard procedure for the preparation of peresters is the acylation process. The manufacturing of tert-Butyl peroxybenzoate involves tert-butyl hydroperoxide and benzoyl chloride. In the reaction a large excess of tert-butyl hydroperoxide is used and the hydrogen chloride formed is removed in vacuum (vacuo) which yields good quantitative results.
Plasticizers
TBPB is often used as a radical initiator in polymerization reactions, such as the production of LDPE from ethylene, and for crosslinking, such as for unsaturated polyester resins.
Polymer chemistry
TBPB is used as a radical initiator for polymerization purposes. It is also used in curing UP resins.
Organic chemistry
TBPB is used in organic chemistry as the catalizator, as a source of benzoyloxy group or as a hydrogen acceptor.
