Potassium carbonate, also known as potash has a chemical formula of K2CO3. It is a white salt that is soluble in water, and forms a strongly alkaline solution.
Potassium carbonate is produced by the following methods of manufacture: (1) By electrolysis of potassium chloride followed by exposing the resultant potassium to carbon dioxide; (2) By treating a solution of potassium hydroxide with excess carbon dioxide to produce potassium carbonate; (3) By treating a solution of potassium hydroxide with carbon dioxide to produce potassium bicarbonate, which is then heated to yield potassium carbonate.
It is used for synthetic ammonia decarbonylation.
It is used to prepare food additives such as potassium sorbate, monopotassium phosphate.
Potassium carbonate is commonly used in the production of soap.
It is used as a raw material to manufacture electro tube, TV kinescope, computer display.
It is used as a leavening agent in the food industry.
It is applied in optical glass to improve clarity, strength and refractive index.
It is used in the manufacturing of print ink, polyesters and explosives.
