    Brief Overview

Epoxy resins are a class of reactive prepolymers and polymers which contain epoxide groups. Epoxy resins are also known as polyepoxides. They can be reacted not only with themselves (cross-linking), but also with other co-reactants ( for example acids, polyfunctional amines, alcohols, phenols). These co-reactants are referred to as hardeners or curatives; the cross-linking reaction is commonly referred to as curing.

    Manufacturing Process

Most common epoxy resins are manufactured using the reaction between epichlorohydrin (ECH) and bisphenol-A (BPA). However, sometimes BPA may be replaced by other raw materials (for example aliphatic glycols, phenol and o-cresol novolacs) to produce resins with specific properties.

Adhesives: thanks to strong adhesive properties, epoxy resin serves as an excellent structural support. It is used in production of snowboards, aircrafts and bicycles.

Electrical Systems: Because epoxy resin is a great insulator, it is used in the production of motors, transformers and generators, where it protects from dust and moisture.

Coatings and Sealant: Because of its corrosion protection properties, epoxy resin serves as an excellent sealant for household items that are corrosive. Epoxy resin also can be used as a protective coating for decorative flooring.
