DL-methionine is an essential amino acid containing sulphur. Methionine consists of an asymmetric carbon and exists as D (dextrogyre) and L (levogyre) optical isomers.
The production process of methionine requires six main raw materials: sulphur, methanol, ammonia, propylene, sulphuric acid and energy (gas – CH4). Methionine methyl mercaptan-propionaldehyde (MMP), the first intermediate, is converted to DL-methionine.
