Brief Overview

Sodium cyclamate is an artificial sweetener that is 30-50 times sweeter than table sugar, and has not nutritional value. In other words, it has zero calories. Sodium cyclamate is often used with other sweeteners, like saccharin, and is cheaper than most sweeteners, such as sucralose.

Manufacturing Process

Sodium cyclamate was synthesized by the sulfonation of cyclohexylamine with chlorosulfonic acid in chloroform to produce cyclohexylammonium N-cyclohexylsulfamate, which was then treated with sodium hydroxide. Sodium cyclamate has also been made by the reaction of nitrocyclohexane with sodium dithionite in aqueous solution in the presence of trisodium phosphate.
