All about Beta-Carotene

Beta-carotene is one of the most important antioxidants required for our body. The name is derived from ‘Carrot’ as beta-carotene pigments were first found by crystallizing carrots. Beta-carotene has the ability to fight against the free radicals in our body and gets converted into Vitamin A in our body.

When free radicals accumulate, they may cause a state known as oxidative stress. This may damage your DNA and other important structures in your cells. This is when antioxidants come into play. Antioxidants destroy completely the free radical, and one such antioxidant is beta-carotene.

The best sources of beta-carotene are carrots, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, spinach, kale, apricots etc. It has amazing health benefits and nowadays widely used as healthy food supplements all over the world.

Why we need beta-carotene for our body? Beta-carotene is precursor of Vitamin A. For healthy skin and mucous membranes, for healthy eyesight we need beta-carotene in our body. In fact it has been observed that the oils in our body are yellowish-orange in colour due to the consumption of beta-carotene rich foods.
