Activated carbon, also known as activated charcoal, is processed carbon that has small pores
that increase the total surface area available for adsorption of particles. It is commonly used in
water filtration systems to filter out large and unwanted particles. Activated carbon filters used in water treatment produces water that has less contaminants and is better tasting. It removes contaminants via a process called adsorption, whereby particles that flow through its porous surface adhere to the surface and are removed from the water flowing through the filter bed containing activated carbon granules.
Activated carbon is also very effective in removing chemicals such as chlorine, pesticides and herbicides that are commonly used in water purification treatment processes. One of the
reasons activated carbon is used in water filtration is to remove such chemicals, giving the water a more pleasant taste as the bad smell and taste associated with chlorine is removed.
The effectiveness of the activated carbon in removing unwanted particles and contaminants
depends on the contact time water has with the filter as well as the pore size of the activated carbon filters. To increase effectiveness, activated carbon of smaller pore sizes should be used,
along with increased contact time.
